Kevin Behan received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1997 and 2003, respectively. As a student in URI’s International Engineering Program (IEP), he also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in German in 1997. Kevin focused his studies on structural engineering, including steel, concrete, composites, and foundation design. As part of his undergraduate studies, Kevin spent a nearly a year in Braunschweig, Germany studying at the Technical University of Braunschweig and working in the Civil Engineering Department’s Institute for Applied Mechanics.  He worked as a summer intern for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation as a field engineer on a project to rebuild the famed Cliff Walk in Newport after it was damaged by hurricane Bob.  Kevin also worked as a research assistant in the Civil and Envinronmental Engineering Department at URI.  Kevin spent a summer performing water quality surveys to investigate pollution sources that was causing repeated closures to shellfishing in upper Narragansett Bay. He also worked on a multi-year project, funded by the Rhode Island DOT, performing automobile crash simulations using advanced finite element modeling techniques.

From 1997 through 2002, Kevin was employed at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT. He worked on the design and initial construction of the new VIRGINIA Class fast attack submarines. His duties involved design and analysis of submarine hull structures and support of shipyard construction of the VIRGINIA Class submarine.
